ATLANTA – August 1, 2017 – The Besal Lighting Education Fund announced today the selection of 13 scholarship recipients for the upcoming 2017/2018 academic year. The scholarships to be awarded total $60,000 and will be shared among eight undergraduate and five graduate students seeking degrees related to lighting design and representing four participating universities: University of Colorado at Boulder, University of Kansas, Kansas State University, and the University of Nebraska (Lincoln and Omaha campuses).
Established in 1983 as a nonprofit trust, The Besal Fund aspires to encourage talented and committed students to pursue a career in the lighting industry. It has awarded more than $780,000 in scholarships to students from accredited schools throughout the United States.
“Though I can’t rule out other opportunities, I could see myself being happy working as a designer for the entirety of my career,” said Riley Johnson, a rising Senior at the University of Nebraska and one of the scholarship recipients. “I see lighting design as something that cannot be perfected, but a skill that can be continually refined as I learn more about it. It’s my goal to become as skilled as possible and be respected throughout the industry as an outstanding engineer and designer.”
Administered and invested by the Illuminating Engineering Society as part of its Lighting Research and Education activities, The Besal Fund is made possible by contributions from Acuity Brands Lighting, its sales representatives and employees. For more information, visit: The Besal Fund
